My Favorite Podcasts

So I have to admit that I’ve only gotten into podcasts in the past year or so. I know, I know, I am SO far behind, but to me, headphones/airpods are for MUSIC, so listening to someone chatter in my ear has been a weird concept to get into. However, I’ve gotten there, and I have some tried and true favorites I listen to as soon as they come out, so here they are.

Maintenance Phase

This is one of my most recent finds, and OH MY GOD it’s my absolute favorite; I’ve binged the entire thing. This podcast delves into the “science” behind fad diets and health “trends”, and spoiler alert, it’s a LOT of junk science. Remember SnackWells cookies? Remember olestra? Remember fat camps??!! I once again feel this is a millenial-targeted podcast, because goddamn did we grow up with some shit….. but now we have the means to look back on it and say what. the. fuck. As a research nurse, I am also intrigued by this podcast because the hosts, Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes, really do their research - from reading the books, to watching the videos, to drinking celery juice, I just laugh along with them at the absurdity of the “diet” industry and appreciate how much work they put into what they do.

Crime Junkie

I fit the basic millenial bitch trope of wanting to watch true crime in my sweats with a glass of wine on a Friday night, so kill me. IDK what it is about us millenial women, maybe it’s growing up watching Unsolved Mysteries and then coming into teen/adulthood watching SVU, I can’t really say, but I love true crime. Is something wrong with me? Probably. But here we are. My favorite thing about this particular true crime podcast is 1.) Ashley and Brit’s voices are like ASMR, and 2). I love the fact that they actively try to solve these cases - through Crime Stoppers, updates from those close to the cases, and fundraisers for investigations, I feel like they’re in it for more than just the basic bitch entertainment factor, which is really admirable. I’ve tried listening to other true crime podcasts, and they just don’t hit the same.

Behind the Bastards

A random Reddit thread introduced me to this podcast. I can’t remember if it was in reference to Dr. Oz or Dr. Phil, but I got sucked in hardcore because it doesn’t matter which one of them were the first I listened to, they’re both bastards, and hot damn does this podcast deep dive! Behind the Bastards digs into the backgrounds of the worst people in history, and honestly, brings a lot of laughs along the way. From historical figures, to celebrities, to politicians or entire groups of people, host Robert Evans and his guests make me laugh and cringe at the same time. One of the great things about this podcast is that they do a weekly “roundup” (It Could Happen Here Weekly), which is a few-hours-long compilation of the week’s episodes.

One Hit Thunder

This is another one I was introduced to via Reddit, because they did an episode on Hanson. Anyone who knows me knows my love for Hanson (and my recent weird feelings about them, listen to the OHT episode!), so I had to check this podcast out, and I immediately loved it. This podcast takes one-hit-wonders and looks at their big songs, then takes a deep dive into their catalogue (if they have one) and discusses whether or not you should give them another listen. As a music lover, and someone who grew up in the 90’s when one hit wonders were a dime a dozen, this is a fantastic podcast, and it’s funny to boot!

The Worst Bestsellers

Their tagline is “we read stuff so you don’t have to” and honestly, this is something I can 100% get behind! From The Secret to your favorite volume of The Babysitter’s Club, hosts Kat and Renata have great insight into all kinds of books from every genre. As a well-documented book lover, this podcast is one that clearly speaks to me, and I’m so glad they do the work of reading things that I would never read, and still providing all the laughs I’d get from being disappointed/disgusted/disturbed.

I’ve got a few podcasts on deck; as I’ve said, getting into podcasts is a new thing for me. But I am finding that I really enjoy the platform, so I appreciate any suggestions you can give, please leave them in the comments below!
